Hanan Alexander is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy of Education at the University of Haifa where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dean of Students, Head of the International School, and Head of the Center for Jewish and Democratic Education. He currently serves as Koret Visiting Professor of Israel Studies in the Helen Diller Center for Jewish Law and Israel Studies and Visiting Professor of Education in the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. He also taught at American Jewish University, where he was Academic Vice President, UCLA, Graduate Theological Union; Jewish Theological Seminary, and Bar Ilan University. Additionally, he is a Visiting Fellow of St. Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge, past president of the Religious Education Association, and past editor of Religious Education.

Alexander was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and earned a PhD in Education and Humanities from Stanford University. He has published 9 books and more than 140 essays in academic and professional journals. His first book Reclaiming Goodness: Education and the Spiritual Quest won a 2001 National Jewish Book from the National Jewish Book Council. Alexander is currently concluding research on dialogue between science and religious education with Professor Tali Tal of the Technion: Israel Institute of Technology under the auspices of the Templeton World Charity Foundation. In collaboration with the Shalom Hartman Institute, he is also completing a study of interdisciplinary humanities education with Dr. Nurit Novis of the University of Haifa funded by the Israel Ministry of Education. In addition, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities recently released the report of an expert committee he chaired on “Values Education: Guidelines for Measurement and Evaluation.”
